Poeme du Bambou
The shakuhachi flutist, Marco Lienhard, joins koto musician, Masayo Ishigure, to create an extraordinary concert of original tonal poems. The combination of these two Japanese instruments, bamboo flute and string instrument, is steeped in tradition; but Lienhards approach to the sounds these instruments make is entirely fresh and new. Mr. Lienhard is a native of Switzerland, and Ms. Ishigure is a native of Japan; both currently live in NYC. From their own differing perspectives, each explores and celebrates the full possibilities of shakuhachi and koto music. From 1981 to 1994, Mr. Lienhard was a member of "Ondekoza," the internationally acclaimed Japanese Taiko drum ensemble. Ms. Ishigure is the Director of Sawai Koto Academy in New York. This concert will feature traditional solo performances, as well as improvised duets. "I am very moved by the sound of Marcos performance. I could tell that he is one of the best Shakuhachi players of our age." S. Takashi, Sennan-City, Japan
